COLOSSIANS 2:16-17 & ROMANS 14:5-6 ARE NOT DIFFICULT TO UNDERSTAND, unless you’ve been blinded by the corruption of ancient Rome. The same Church that INVENTED the pagan SUN-day holy day that Protestant Christians adopted.
Not one verse…NOT ONE… in the entire New Testament commands Christians to honor Sunday. But the Sabbath is mentioned 59 times in the New Testament alone.
Now, let’s examine Colossians 2:16 phrase by phrase:
“Let no man therefore judge you in meat”
(This refers to the ceremonial feast requirements of the Mosaic law.)
“or in drink”
(Again, ceremonial drink offerings tied to festivals.)
“or in respect of a holyday”
(These are the feast days and sacrifices—ceremonial, temporary, shadows.)
“or of the new moon”
(The festivals were calculated by the new moon. The weekly Sabbath was never tied to lunar cycles.)
“or of the Sabbath days”
(Notice the KJV and NKJV render this in the plural. Why? Because among the 7 annual feasts/festivals, 5 of them are designated as ceremonial Sabbaths. They did not depend on the seventh day of the week.
Example: the 2nd and 8th days of Passover are ceremonial Sabbaths, but the first day of Passover and the Feast of Firstfruits are not.)
Verse 17: “Which are a shadow of things to come; but the body is of Christ.”
(The ceremonial system was a “shadow.” But tell me how in heaven’s name is the Fourth Commandment, the Sabbath of the Creator, a shadow? The Bible never, not once, says “Christ is your Sabbath.” That’s Sunday pagan fantasy, not Scripture.
Yes, Messiah freed us from the burden of sacrifices, ordinances, rituals, circumcision, and death penalties. That’s what Colossians 2 is about. But He never erased the eternal Ten Commandments.
And let me remind you, the Sabbath predates Sinai. Before the Law was even given, Israel was commanded in Exodus 16 to honor the seventh day. Exodus 20 only later engraved it in stone. The Sabbath existed before the Law of Moses. It stands above it, AS DO ALL 10 COMMANDMENTS!
So listen closely, Sunday worshipers: the 7th-day Sabbath is no “shadow.” It is eternal, holy, set apart at creation FOR MANKIND, written in stone by the very hand of YHWH. And you will never find a single verse that transfers that sanctity to your Roman-invented SUN-day.
ROMANS 14:5-6 ANOTHER ABUSED “EXCUSE” CHAPTER IN THE NEW TESTAMENT!
Sunday Christians love to run to Romans 14 to justify breaking the 4th Commandment, as if Paul suddenly gave them a license to trample on the only Commandment that begins with the words “REMEMBER.” But let’s slow down and actually read the chapter with both eyes open.
Just like Colossians 2, Romans 14 is also about food, drink, feasting, and dietary scruples, NOT the holy, eternal, handwritten-in-stone Sabbath of YHWH.
Let’s review:
Romans 14 mentions eating, meat, herbs, food, drink, and feast practices over 20 times.
The ENTIRE context is about believers judging each other over dietary choices, ritual meals, and man-made fasting days.
So when Paul says in verse 5:
“One person esteems one day above another; another esteems every day alike. Let each be fully convinced in his own mind.”
What is he talking about? The ceremonial feast-day Sabbaths of Leviticus 23, the same ones Paul calls “shadows” in Colossians 2:16–17.
The First of Unleavened Bread.
The Day of Atonement.
The Feast of Trumpets.
The Feast of Tabernacles.
The Day of Pentecost
All of these were called “Sabbaths” in Leviticus 23. And all of these were shadows of Messiah, temporary ceremonies nailed to His cross (Colossians 2:14).
But let me be VERY clear:
The 7th day Sabbath is nowhere in the text of Romans 14.
Paul DOES NOT lump the eternal 4th Commandment in with food scruples and feast rituals.
How do we know? Because the weekly Sabbath was never based on food or drink or new moons or feast calendars. It was established by YHWH at creation. AND WAS GIVEN TO ISRAEL BEFORE THE COMMANDS WERE WRITTEN IN EXODUS 16. The 10 Commandments were not written until Exodus 20.
So if you wave Romans 14 in the air as your “permission slip” to desecrate the 7th Day Sabbath, you’ve just twisted Paul into a liar and a lawbreaker. Worse, you’ve joined hands with the same pagan Rome that INVENTED your “Sunday holy day” out of sun-worship and Mary-idolatry.
Paul was not abolishing the Sabbath Commandment, he was freeing Gentile converts from being judged over whether they kept the Mosaic food-based feast days.
But if you think Paul was telling you that the 4th Commandment no longer matters, then congratulations, you’ve just called both Paul AND Christ liars. Paul himself said in Romans 3:31:
“Do we then make void the Law through faith? God forbid: yea, we establish the Law.”
And Christ Himself declared: MATTHEW 5:19: WHOEVER therefore BREAKS ONE OF THE LEAST OF THESE COMMANDMENTS, and TEACHES men so, shall be called LEAST in the KINGDOM OF HEAVEN; but whoever DOES and TEACHES them, he shall be called GREAT in the kingdom of heaven.
(MARK 7:6-9) 6 He answered and said unto them, Well hath Esaias prophesied of you HYPOCRITES, as it is written, This people honor me with their lips, but their heart is far from me.
7 Howbeit IN VAIN DO THEY WORSHIP ME, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men.
8 For laying aside the commandment of God, ye hold the tradition of men….
9 And he said unto them, Full well YOU REJECT THE COMMANDMENT OF GOD, that ye may keep your own tradition.
MATTHEW 19:16 Now behold, one came and said to Him, “Good Teacher, WHAT GOOD THING SHALL I DO THAT I MAY HAVE ETERNAL LIFE?” 17 So He said to him, “Why do you call Me good? No one is good but One, that is, God. BUT IF YOU WANT TO ENTER INTO LIFE, KEEP THE COMMANDMENTS.”
